Here’s a quick history and background on British watering cans and watering in general.
The History of Watering Cans
Watering cans have been around for centuries and they evolved from simple clay vessels to the modern metal and plastic containers we know today. Ancient Egyptians used clay vessels to water their crops, and the Romans created wooden barrels with holes punched in the sides. The first metal watering cans were made in Germany in the 1700s, and these cans were made of copper or tin. In the 19th century, watering cans were made of galvanized iron, and in the early 20th century, they were made of aluminum and plastic.
The Origins and History of Haws
Haws was founded in 1886 by John Haws, a plumber from London. He began making watering cans out of copper and galvanized iron, and when he retired from plumbing, he devoted himself to making and selling watering cans. In 1892, he moved his business to Birmingham, where he continued to produce watering cans of increasing quality. He was awarded a Royal Warrant in 1912 for his watering cans, and in 1922, he opened a factory in Birmingham.
Haws continued to innovate, and in the 1930s, they introduced the iconic Haws Indoor Watering Can, which is still popular today. In the 1980s, Haws introduced a new range of plastic watering cans, and in the 1990s, they began to focus on garden tools and accessories. Haws also introduced several new designs and colors to their watering cans, and they now offer a wide range of designs and colors.
